Age 20, from Washington County, he enlisted as Private, Company G, First North Carolina Infantry on 15 June 1861 at Plymouth, NC.
On the Campaign
He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was absent, wounded to at least November 1862, listed as a prisoner into May 1863, and absent without leave "in the enemy lines" afterward. He probably never returned to his unit and was declared a deserter to the enemy at Plymouth, NC by August 1864.
