Age 18, from Guilford County, he was conscripted as Private, Company H, First North Carolina Infantry on 8 July 1862 in Greensboro.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was absent, wounded and sick through December 1863. He returned to camp on 16 January 1864 but was sent to the Winder Division hospital in Richmond, VA on 12 May and died there of typhoid fever on 28 May 1864.
