Before Sharpsburg
Age 30, from Guilford County, he enlisted as Private, Company F, First North Carolina Infantry on 26 July 1861 in Greensboro.
On the Campaign
He was wounded in the foot in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was back with his Company on 23 May 1863. He was captured in the Wilderness, VA on 12 May 1864 and held at Point Lookout, MD. He was transferred to Elmira, NY on 3 August 1864. He was paroled on 13 March 1865 and exchanged at James River, VA on the 14th. He was briefly in a Richmond, VA hospital on the 18th and furloughed home for 30 days on 23 March 1865.
