Before Sharpsburg
Age 33, from Chowan County, he enlisted as Private, Company A, First North Carolina Infantry on 28 June 1861 in Warrenton, NC. He may have been wounded at Ellerson's Mill (Mechanicsville), VA on 26 June 1862.
On the Campaign
He was wounded by a gunshot in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862 and captured.
The rest of the War
He was admitted the US Army General Hospital on Camden Street in Baltimore on 10 February 1863 and was to be transferred as a prisoner to Fort McHenry on 1 April 1863, but did not arrive there. He did not return to duty and was listed as "absent wounded" and "permanently disabled" on the Company muster rolls to the end of the war.
After the War
He died between 1863 and 1866, probably from his Sharpsburg wound.

He married (cousin?) Angenetta Lane (1835-1925) in January 1852 and they 4 daughters before the war. In an 1887 pension application, his widow reported he was "mortally wounded in Virginia, 1863 or 1864."
