Age 21, from a farming family in Guilford County, he was conscripted as Private, Company A, First North Carolina Infantry on 15 July 1862 in Guilford.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was admitted to a hospital in Richmond, VA on 30 September and returned to duty by November 1862. He was captured at Gettysburg, PA on 3 July 1863 and held at Fort Delaware. He died there of chronic diarrhea on 20 September 1863.
