Age 19, from Nash County, he was conscripted as Private, Company C, First North Carolina Infantry on 15 July 1862 in Wake County.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was captured at Spotsylvania Court House, VA on 12 May 1864 and a prisoner at Point Lookout, MD until August 1864, when he was transferred to Elmira, NY.He died of disease there on 8 December 1864.
