Before Sharpsburg

Age 18, from New Hanover County, he enlisted as Private, Company E, First North Carolina Infantry on 7 June 1861.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was captured at Spotsylvania Court House, VA on 12 May 1864 and held at Point Lookout, MD until transferred to Elmira, NY on 6 August 1864. He was paroled there on 1 Mach 1865, sent to James River, VA, and on to a hospital in Richmond on the 10th. He was captured there at the fall of the city on 3 April and died of typhoid fever on 19 April 1865.
