Before Sharpsburg
Age 19, from Edenton in Chowan County, he enlisted there as Private, Company A, First North Carolina Infantry on 18 May 1861.
On the Campaign
He was wounded in the arm in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was furloughed home but overstayed and was listed as absent without leave from November 1862 to November 1863, when he returned to duty. He was captured at Spotsylvania Court House, VA on 12 May 1864 and was a prisoner at Elmira, NY. He was released on 27 Jun 1865 after taking an oath of allegiance.
