Before Sharpsburg

Age 29, from Wilmington in New Hanover County, he enlisted as Private, Company E, First North Carolina Infantry on 7 June 1861 at Middle Sound, NC. He was promoted to Corporal on 26 August 1861.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was in a hospital in Richmond, VA, and on furlough to 5 November, then listed as absent without leave to the end of the year. He was back with his Company by February 1863 and was promoted to Sergeant by February 1864. He was captured at Spotsylvania Court House, VA on 12 May 1864 and was a prisoner at Point Lookout, MD. He was transferred to Elmira, NY on 3 August 1864 and released on 19 June 1865 after taking an oath of allegiance.
