Before Antietam

He enlisted as Private, Company A, 2nd US Infantry on 14 December 1854 and reenlisted at Fort Laramie in November 1859. He was promoted to Corporal and First Sergeant by 1862.

On the Campaign

He commanded Company A of the 2nd US Infantry at Antietam.

The rest of the War

He was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant on 4 October 1862 (to date from July) and to First Lieutenant on 9 June 1863. He was honored by brevet to Captain on 2 July 1863 for his service at Gettysburg.

After the War

He continued in Regular Army service and was promoted to Captain on 15 August 1867 and assigned to the 12th US Infantry on 1 January 1871.
