Before Antietam

A 23 year old clerk, he enlisted as Private, Company H, 10th United States Infantry in Philadelphia, PA on 1 May 1856 and was First Sergeant when he reenlisted in May 1861 at Fort Wise in the Colorado Territory (Major John Sedgwick, 1st US Cavalry, commanding). He was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant, 10th US Infantry on 24 October 1861 at Fort Union, NM.

On the Campaign

He commanded Company G of the 2nd US Infantry at Antietam.

The rest of the War

He was promoted to First Lieutenant on 12 June 1863 and was regimental Quartermaster to 6 December 1864. He was appointed Captain of Company B to date from 13 September 1864 but resigned his commission on 10 June 1865.
