From Hartford, he enrolled as 2nd Lieutenant of Company B, 16th Connecticut Infantry on 16 July 1862.
On the Campaign
He was wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862 and was promoted to First Lieutenant on 20 September 1862 (vice J. Barnum).
The rest of the War
He resigned his commission on 29 November 1862.
