He enlisted in Charlestown, VA (now WV) as a Private, in Glenn's Company, 7th (Ashby's) Virginia Cavalry on 26 June 1861 and was promoted to Sergeant on 28 October 1861. He transferred to Company A, 12th Virginia Cavalry on about 15 June 1862.

On the Campaign

He was killed in a skirmish at Poolesville, MD on 8 September 1862.
