Before Antietam
From East Windsor, he enlisted as a Private in Company G, 16th Connecticut Infantry on 8 August 1862.
On the Campaign
He was captured in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was paroled on 6 October 1862 and promoted to Corporal on 6 March 1863. He was captured at Plymouth, NC on 20 April 1864, was a prisoner at Andersonville, GA (as Edwin Ailing), and was paroled on 10 December 1864. He was discharged on 8 June 1865.
