He came to East Windsor, CT from Germany with his family about 1855 and was a 15 year old on his father's farm there in 1860. He enlisted as a Private in Company G, 16th Connecticut Infantry on 6 August 1862.

He was wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was discharged for disability on 25 October 1862.
