Before Sharpsburg

He enlisted as a Private in Company H, 6th Georgia State Troops on 21 October 1861 and mustered out in April 1862. He enlisted again, in Newton County, GA as a Private in Company E, 53rd Georgia Infantry on 3 May 1862. He was promoted to 2nd Sergeant sometime after 1 September 1862.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September.

The rest of the War

He was in Atlanta, GA in October 1862, probably on a furlough. He was appointed First Sergeant of his Company on 5 June 1863 but was wounded again, by a gunshot through his left lung, on 3 July 1863 at Gettysburg, PA. He was left behind and captured there on 5 July. He was in US Army field hospitals on the field until admitted to the Seminary Hospital in Gettysburg on 6 August 1863, and he died there of wounds on 27 August 1863.
