Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 23 year old farmer on his father's place in the Black Hall District of Fulton County, GA. He enlisted as a Private in Company C, 53rd Georgia Infantry on 22 July 1862 at Vaughn's Farm,, VA as a substitute for James H. Brown.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was in Chimborazo Hospital #3 in Richmond to 14 November 1862, then transferred to a hospital in Petersburg, VA. He was back with his Company by February 1863. He was wounded again, on 20 June 1864 at Petersburg, VA and in Richmond, VA hospitals or on furlough afterward. He was listed as absent wounded or sick to December 1864 but as absent without leave in February 1865, the last muster roll in his file.
