Age 19, from Pike County, he enlisted at Zebulon as a Private in Company H, 53rd Georgia Infantry on 5 May 1862.

On the Campaign

He was wounded by a gunshot through his elbow in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was in a hospital in Richmond, VA by 3 October and furloughed home on 23 October 1862 for 60 days. He was wounded again, by a gunshot to his hip, at the Wilderness, VA on 6 May 1864 and was furloughed home.
