Before Sharpsburg

A farmer from Anson (or Guilford) County, NC, he enlisted at Zebulon, Pike County, GA as a Private in Company H, 53rd Georgia Infantry on 5 May 1862. He was appointed Musician/Drum Major, date not given.

On the Campaign

He was wounded by a gunshot to his groin in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862 and captured there.

The rest of the War

He was briefly in US Army General Hospital #5 in Frederick, MD on 12-13 October, then at Fort McHenry in Baltimore, MD by 14 October when he was paroled and sent to Aikens Landing, VA for exchange. He was admitted to a hospital in Richmond, VA on 23 October and given a 35 day furlough on 10 November 1862.

He was captured again, at Strasburg, VA on 19 October 1864 and sent to Point Lookout, MD on 24 October. He took an oath of allegiance and was released on 20 June 1865.

There's a note in his file dated 17 September 1864 that he was to be transferred to Company I of the 43rd North Carolina Infantry, but that does not appear to have happened.
