Age 16, from Rowan County, he enlisted as a Private in Company E, 5th North Carolina Infantry on 22 June 1861, but he was discharged for being underage on 12 September 1861 at Culpeper, VA. He enlisted again, as a Private in Company K, 4th North Carolina Infantry on 9 March 1862.

On the Campaign

He was mortally wounded and captured in action at Fox's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862 (or at Sharpsburg on the 17th). He died of wounds on 17 September 1862.
