Before Sharpsburg

From Rowan County, he enlisted as a Private in Company B, 4th North Carolina Infantry on 25 April 1861 at Statesville. He was promoted to 5th Sergeant on 2 September 1861.

On the Campaign

He was captured at Fredrick, MD on 12 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was briefly at a US Army hospital in Frederick, MD, then a prisoner to Fort Delaware by about 18 September. He was paroled and sent to Aiken's Landing, VA for exchange on 2 October and was in a hospital in Richmond, VA and furloughed on the 22nd. He was promoted to First Sergeant on 31 October and commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in December 1862, but he was killed on 3 May 1863 at Chancellorsville, VA.
