Age 20, from Wayne County, he enlisted as a Private in Company D, 4th North Carolina Infantry on 28 June 1861 at Goldsboro.

On the Campaign

He was captured at Fredrick, MD on 12 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was a prisoner at Fort Delaware by about 15 September, then paroled and sent to Aiken's Landing, VA for exchange on 2 October. He was furloughed home on 23 October and was declared exchanged on 10 November 1862. He returned to duty about January 1863 but was sick in hospital in May 1863 with no later military record.
