Age 21, from Beaufort County, he enlisted as a Private in Company I, 4th North Carolina Infantry on 25 June 1861 in Beaufort County.
On the Campaign
He was captured at Boonesboro, MD on 15 September 1862 - the day following the regiment's fight at Fox's Gap on South Mountain.
The rest of the War
He was a prisoner at Fort Delaware by about 20 September, paroled and sent to Aiken's Landing, VA for exchange on 2 October, and declared exchanged on 10 November 1862. He was listed as a deserter after 6 June 1863.
