Before Sharpsburg
In 1860 he was a 30 year old farmer at Olin in Iredell County, NC. He enlisted as 5th Sergeant of Company C, 4th North Carolina Infantry on 13 June 1861 in Statesville. He was 2nd Sergeant by December 1861.
On the Campaign
He was captured at Boonesboro, MD on 15 September 1862 - the day following the regiment's fight at Fox's Gap on South Mountain.
The rest of the War
He was a prisoner at Fort Delaware by about 15 September, paroled and sent to Aiken's Landing, VA for exchange on 2 October, and declared exchanged on 10 November 1862. He was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant of his Company on 12 March 1863 and may have been promoted to First Lieutenant on 1 July. He was captured again, on 2 April 1865 at Petersburg, VA, briefly held at the Old Capitol Prison in Washington, DC, then sent on to Johnson's Island, OH on 9 April. He took an oath of allegiance and was released on 18 June 1865.
After the War
In 1870 he was a farmer at Powell in Craighead County, Arkansas.
