Age 20, he enlisted as a Private in Company D, 23rd Ohio Infantry on 20 May 1861.

On the Campaign

He was with his Company on the Maryland Campaign of 1862, and helped bury Private Hiram Durkee at Fox's Gap on 14 September.

The rest of the War

He mustered out with his Company on 26 July 1865.
