A 25 year old brickmaker from Rowan County, he enlisted as a Private in Company K of the 4th North Carolina Infantry on 30 May 1861 at New Bern.

On the Campaign

He was captured in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was briefly a prisoner at Fort Delaware, sent to Aiken's Landing, VA on 2 October for exchange, and was formally exchanged on 10 November. He was detailed as a teamster for much or all of 1864 and was paroled on 13 April 1865 at Lynchburg, VA.
