Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was an 18 year old farm boy on his parent's place at Long Acre, Beaufort County, NC. He enlisted at Washington, NC as a Private in Company E of the 4th North Carolina Infantry on 3 June 1861.

On the Campaign

He was captured in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was paroled at Sharpsburg on 27 September and was probably exchanged to return to duty, date not given. He was appointed Corporal on 1 May 1863 but was captured again at Fredericksburg (Chancellorsville?), VA on 3 May 1863. He was soon after exchanged at City Point, VA on 10 May. He was promoted to Sergeant on 1 September 1863. He was captured for the third time at Petersburg, VA on 2 April 1865 and held at Point Lookout, MD until 21 June 1861 when he took an oath of allegiance and was released.

After the War

By 1870 he was working on his father's farm at Bath, Beaufort County, NC. In 1880 he was an unmarried merchant in Bath.
