Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was 16 years old and lived on the Thomas and Sarah Bates farm near York in Spalding County, GA. He enlisted as a Private in Company I, 13th Georgia Infantry on 8 July 1861 in Griffin, GA. He was absent, sick, on furlough from 3 July to 3 August 1862.

On the Campaign

He was severely wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was in a Richmond, VA hospital by 3 October 1862 and again on furlough, to 14 March 1863. He was wounded again, near Winchester, VA on 13 or 14 June 1863 and was detailed as a blacksmith to the regimental train (wagons) in August 1863. There is no later military record.
