Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was an 18 year old worker on his parent's farm near Philippi in Barbour County, VA. He enlisted as a Private in Company H, 31st Virginia Infantry on 11 May 1861 at Monterey. He was wounded in the thigh at Manassas, VA on 28 August 1862.

On the Campaign

He was wounded by a gunshot to his forearm, which broke the ulna (bone), in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was in hospitals in Richmond, VA to the end of 1862, then in Danville, VA. He died in the CS General Hospital in Danville, VA on 30 (or 31) August 1863. One record has his death on 29 May.
