He enlisted at Huttonsville, VA as a Private in Company A, 31st Virginia Infantry on 14 June 1861.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in his right thigh in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was admitted to a hospital in Staunton, VA on 2 October 1862 and was there and in Richmond hospitals or on furlough to July 1863, when he was judged medically "unfit for field service." On 31 August 1864, on the last record in his military file, he was listed as detailed as a Brigade Wagoner.
