Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 26 year old farm worker on his parent's place near Clarksburg, Harrison County, VA. He enlisted at Bridgeport (or Clarksburg) as a Private in Company C, 31st Virginia Infantry on 21 May 1861.

On the Campaign

He was captured in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was paroled on 21 September 1862 at Sharpsburg and was back with his Company by January 1863. He was captured at Amelia Court House, VA on 3 April 1865 and sent to Hart's Island, NY by the 7th. He was transferred to the DeCamp US Army Hospital on Devil's Island, NY on 1 July and was released on 21 July 1865, when he took an oath of allegiance.

After the War

By 1880 and to at least 1910 he was a farmer in Harrison County, WV.
