Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 16 year old worker on his parent's farm near Weston, Lewis County, VA. He enlisted at Skin Creek in Lewis County as a Private in Company I, 31st Virginia Infantry on 2 June 1861. He was appointed 3rd Corporal on 27 August 1861, detailed to work at the Richmond Arsenal from 1 March to 21 July 1862, and was promoted to Sergeant by August 1862.

On the Campaign

He was captured in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was paroled on 21 September 1862 and returned to duty by January 1863. He was captured and paroled at Appomattox Court House, VA on 9 April 1865.

After the War

By 1870 and to at least 1910 he was a farmer at Weston, by then West Virginia. He had retired there by 1920.
