Before Sharpsburg
He enlisted as a Private in Company B (later renamed G), 5th Alabama Infantry on 15 April 1861 in Livingston, AL. He was appointed 2nd Lieutenant on 27 April 1862.
On the Campaign
He was wounded in action near Turner's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was in a hospital in Richmond, VA by 1 October and then on furlough home. He was in a Richmond hospital again in March 1863 with ascites (fluid in the abdomen) and furloughed again on 26 April 1863 for 30 days. He was listed as absent, sick, "without authority" after September 1863 and was dropped from the Company Roll on 8 October 1864.
