Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 27 year old farmer near Grove Hill in Clarke County, AL. He enlisted as a Private in Company A (later renamed I), 5th Alabama Infantry on 6 May 1861 at Grove Hill.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action near Turner's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was admitted to a Richmond, VA hospital on 30 September and returned to duty on 5 December 1862. He was wounded again, on 5 May 1864 in the Wilderness, VA and captured there. He was sent to Point Lookout, MD on 18 May and transferred to Elmira, NY on 17 August 1864. He died there of chronic diarrhea on 16 October (or November) 1864 and was buried in the prison cemetery there.
