Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 27 year old clerk at Clayton, Barbour County, AL. He enlisted as a Private in Company A, 5th Alabama Infantry on 15 May 1861 at Clayton.

On the Campaign

He was captured in action near Turner's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was held at Fort Delaware to 2 October, sent to Aiken's Landing, VA, and declared exchanged on 10 November 1862. He was appointed 3rd Sergeant about February 1863 and was detailed on recruiting duty from then into April 1863. He was captured at Petersburg, VA on 2 April 1865 and was a prisoner at Point Lookout, MD until released on 16 June 1865 after taking an oath of allegiance.
