Before Sharpsburg
He enlisted as a Private in Company D (later renamed C), 5th Alabama Infantry on 16 March 1861 at Bell's Landing, AL.
On the Campaign
He was captured in action near Turner's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was held at Fort Delaware until paroled on 2 October, then sent to Aiken's Landing, VA for exchange. He was declared exchanged and eligible to return to duty on 10 November 1862. He was wounded at Chancellorsville, VA on 3 May 1863. He was reported captured again, at Gettysburg, PA in July 1863, but was in a Lynchburg, VA hospital on 6 July 1863. He was wounded on 5 May 1864 at Spotsylvania Court House and was retired to the Invalid Corps on 27 October 1864.
