Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was an 18 year old student living with his parents and 10 siblings on a farm near Sydenham in Sumter County, AL. He enlisted as a Private in Company F (later renamed E), 5th Alabama Infantry on 26 April 1861 at Livingston in Sumter County.

On the Campaign

He was captured in action near Turner's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was a prisoner at Fort Delaware until 2 October when he was sent to Aiken's Landing, VA for exchange. He was captured in mid-1864 and listed as absent, a prisoner, to October 1864, the last record in his military file.
