Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 19 year old living on the large Fort farm in Harrells, Dallas County, AL. He enlisted as a Private in Company G (later renamed F), 5th Alabama Infantry on 25 July 1861 at Cahaba.

On the Campaign

He was captured in action near Turner's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was a prisoner at Fort Delaware until 2 October when he was sent to Aiken's Landing, VA for exchange. He was in a Richmond, VA hospital from 14 to 22 October and was declared exchanged on 10 November 1862. He was mortally wounded at Chancellorsville, VA on 3 May 1863 on died of wounds in Winder Hospital, Richmond, VA on 23 May 1863.
