He enlisted as a Private in Company B (later renamed G), 5th Alabama Infantry on 15 June 1861 in Livingston, AL.

On the Campaign

He was captured in action near Turner's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was a prisoner at Fort Delaware until 2 October when he was sent to Aiken's Landing, VA for exchange. He was declared exchanged on 10 November 1862. He was acting regimental Commissary Sergeant by May 1863 and into June 1864, and was elected 2nd Lieutenant on 20 August 1864. He was home in Livingston, AL on furlough in February 1865, by then Captain of his Company, and was surrendered and paroled at Meridian, MS on 11 May 1865.
