He enlisted as a Private in Company B (later renamed G), 5th Alabama Infantry on 1 August 1861 in Union Mills, VA.

On the Campaign

He was captured in action near Turner's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was a prisoner at Fort Delaware until 2 October when he was sent to Aiken's Landing, VA for exchange. He was declared exchanged on 10 November 1862. He was mortally wounded by a gunshot to his back in May 1864 and died of wounds on 6 July 1864 at Richmond, VA.
