Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 17 year old student living with his father and siblings on their farm near Memphis in Pickens County, AL. He enlisted as a Private in Company C (later renamed H), 5th Alabama Infantry on 7 or 8 August 1861 in Pickensville. He was promoted to 2nd Sergeant by March 1862.

On the Campaign

He was captured in action near Turner's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was a prisoner at Fort Delaware until 2 October when he was sent to Aiken's Landing, VA for exchange. He was declared exchanged on 10 November 1862. He was killed at Chancellorsville, VA on 3 May 1863.
