Before Sharpsburg
In 1860 he was an 18 year old student living on the Charles Gwin farm near Grove Hill in Clarke County, AL. He enlisted as a Private in Company A (renamed I), 5th Alabama Infantry on 6 May 1861 at Grove Hill.
On the Campaign
He was captured in action near Turner's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was a prisoner at Fort Delaware until 2 October when he was sent to Aiken's Landing, VA for exchange. He was officially declared exchanged on 10 November 1862.
After the War
By 1870 and to at least 1910 he was a farmer in Clarke County, AL.
