He enlisted as a Private in Company A (renamed I), 5th Alabama Infantry on 6 May 1861 at Grove Hill, Clarke County, AL.
On the Campaign
He was captured in action near Turner's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was a prisoner at Fort Delaware until 2 October when he was sent to Aiken's Landing, VA for exchange. He was officially declared exchanged on 10 November 1862. He was transferred to Company E, Jeff Davis Legion, Mississippi Cavalry on 23 January 1863. He joined his new unit on 5 February and was appointed Color Bearer on 1 November 1863. He was captured at Smithfield, NC and paroled at Raleigh on 22 April 1865.
