Before Sharpsburg

He enlisted as a Private in Company I (later renamed D), 5th Alabama Infantry on 12 May 1861 at Montgomery, AL. He was detailed as a teamster/ambulance driver in July and August 1862.

On the Campaign

He was captured in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was a prisoner at Fort McHenry to 18 October 1862, then sent to Fortress Monroe, VA for exchange. He was furloughed for 30 days on 10 November 1862. He was detailed as a Brigade ambulance driver by October 1864 and was surrendered and paroled at Appomattox Court House, VA on 9 April 1865 while assigned to the Brigade medical department.
