In 1860 he was 24 years old and lived on his parents large farm/plantation in Chocktaw County, AL. He enlisted as a Private in Company I (later renamed D), 5th Alabama Infantry on 25 April 1861 in Greensboro, Hale County, AL.

On the Campaign

He was probably wounded in action in Maryland in September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was on wounded furlough for 60 days in October and November 1862. He was detailed as a Division courier by February 1863 and through at least November 1864, then was transferred to the Jeff Davis Legion on 14 December 1864.
