He enlisted as a Private in Company I (later renamed K), 5th Alabama Infantry on 16 May 1861 in Montgomery, AL.

On the Campaign

He was probably wounded in action in Maryland in September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was on wounded furlough for 30 days in October 1862. He was captured at Waterloo, PA on the return from Gettysburg on 5 July 1863 and was a prisoner at Fort Delaware by 7 July. He died there of small pox on 24 October 1863.

He is easily confused with Francis D Meadows (c.1842-) of Lowndes County, son of James and Ellen, who served in Company M, 6th Alabama Infantry.
