Before Antietam
A 23 year old painter, he enlisted in Buffalo on 7 May 1861 to serve two years, and mustered in on 20 May as a Private in Company E, 21st New York Infantry.
On the Campaign
He was wounded in the right arm in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
His arm was amputated and he was discharged for disability on 31 October 1862.
