In 1860 he was a 22 year old farmer on his parent's place at Yellow Springs in Hampshire County, VA (now WV). He enlisted as a Private in Company F, 33rd Virginia Infantry on 8 April 1862.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was killed at Chancellorsville, VA on 3 May 1863.
