Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was 18 years old and lived with his parents and siblings at German Settlement (now Aurora) in Preston County, VA (now WV). He enlisted as a Private in Company F, 33rd Virginia Infantry on 17 August 1862 in Warren County, VA, and was promoted to 2nd Corporal on 1 September.

On the Campaign

He was wounded by a gunshot in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was absent, wounded and sick, to the end of 1862. He was promoted to First Corporal on 1 September 1863 and captured at Spotsylvania Court House, VA on 12 May 1864. He was held at Fort Delaware until released 19 June 1865 after taking an oath of allegiance.

After the War

By 1880 and to at least 1900 he was a carpenter in Oakland, Garrett County, MD.
