Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 16 year old farm boy on his parent's place at Fayetteville, Fayette County, GA. He enlisted as a Private in Company I, 13th Georgia Infantry on 9 September 1861 at Griffin, GA.

On the Campaign

He was severely wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was on furlough home from 1 November 1862 to 14 March 1863. He was wounded again, on 12 May 1864 at Spotsylvania Court House, VA, in Richmond, VA hospitals to 21 July 1864, then again sent home on furlough with "no probability of his ever being fit for service."
